Working while on the road is a great way of making your travels last – for some backpackers it provides a unique look into local life and an affordable way to stay in a place for more than a few days; for many others it becomes a way of life, moving from place to place and backpacking for years on end.
Life is a tricky balance of earning some cash without being taken advantage of, partying as often as possible, and constantly meeting and saying goodbye to friends (and the occasional dodging of immigration officials looking to examine your non-existant work visa). There are highs and lows but if you have the time, this is a life changing decision.
I personally worked while backpacking across Europe for almost two years, and ended up settling in a city on the other side of the world from home. I’m sharing my stories so that you can learn from my mistakes, take advantage of my luck, and maybe spend a little less of your time partying.
